Quelques commentaires sur cette liste en regard avec la liste actuelle
L'apparition de cent ascensions avait un avantage et un inconvénient : l'avantage était dans un beau nombre rond accessible sur quelques années. l'inconvénient était la sélection trop nécessairement réductrice et les distances entre chaque BIG.
La série 1 sert de chef de file avec le massif le plus important, les Alpes et un des pays les plus visités, la France. Tous les dix noms sont encore dans la liste aujourd'hui. Ce sont des légendes assurées..
La série 2 fait de même avec les Pyrénées du même pays et les dix noms témoignent toujours d'une belle vitalité. C'était un bon choix.
La série 3 n'avait guère de sens géographiquement avec la liaison du massif central aux Vosges avec sa soeur Forêt Noire. Mais les dix sont toujours là. Seul, le Wiedener-Eck a été relevé jusqu'au Belchen..
La série 4 fuyait dans toutes les Ardennes belges, françaises, allemandes et luxembourgeoises. Les dix sont toujours là. On regrette un peu la légèreté de Corbion.
La série 5 fuyait dans tous les bergs flamands, néerlandais et du nord de la France. Tous sont toujours dans nos listes actuelles.
La série 6 envisageait toute l'Italie en dix noms. Un leurre évidemment. Neuf sont toujours là mais ont été bien accompagnés par 141 autres aujourd'hui. Pietra Spada a fait les frais de travaux en son sein..
La série 7 disait bonjour à la Suisse. A ce jour, les dix noms sont toujours là, parfois dispatchés dans les pays frontaliers s'ils l'étaient eux-mêmes. Et 65 autres petits suisses sont arrivés....
La série 8 traversait les Balkans sur plus de deux mille kilomètres et on avait même inséré l'Autriche au nord. Dès lors, ces pionniers sont toujours présents mais avec une centaine de frères en plus et une série unique pour l'Autriche.
La série 9 voulait s'attaquer au nord en unissant l'Ecosse et la Norvège, munie de ses fjords. Les dix noms sont encore présents aujourd'hui. Seul Weardale a été renommé de manière plus précise..
La série 10 avait le même problème en Espagne que pour l'Italie. Dix noms pour un pays aussi vaste et aussi montagneux : un autre leurre. L'insignifiant Padornelo a aujourd'hui disparu mais les autres sont restés.
On peut donc constater qu'en 2005, 98 noms parmi les 100 premiers subsistent toujours dans la liste des 1.000 BIGs
A few comments about this listing according to the present one
The birth of a 100 names'listing had one advantage and one problem : the advantage was a round number available on a few years of cycling. The problem was the too strong selection with long distances between two different BIGs
The serie number 1 took the leadership with one of the most visited country (France) and the widest mountaineous massive (the Alps). All the 10 names in this serie are always included in the listing today. They are wellknown legendary climbs.
The serie number 2 is the same with another important massive : the Pyrenees. All the names are always attractive now. It was a good choice !
The serie number 3 had no real sense with the link between three very different regions : Central Massive, Vosges and Black Forest. But the ten names are always thre. Only Wiedener-Eck wins some meters with the top of Belchen.
The serie number 4 was dispatched in all the Ardennes in Luxemburg, Belgium and Germany. But all the names are always prensent. Perhaps was Corbion a little easy.
The serie number 5 caught all the Bergs in the Flanders country, Netherlands and the northern France. Always present !
The serie number 6 tempted a crazy thing : to cover Italy with only ten names. Impossible. Today there are 141 other italian climbs aside the 9 first ones, because Pietra Spada disappeared due to a problem of road's destruction.
The serie number 7 told "hello" to Switzerland with only ten names for such a mountaineous country. Many friends just near by now !
The serie number 8 tried to cross all the Balkans Massive in one shot : more than 2.000 km : impossible, almost with the additionnal Austria. well, now, the Balkans have been dispatched into some different series
The serie number 9 linked Scotland and Norway. All the names are always there. Just the word "Weardale" not as much precise has been replaced.
The serie number 10 tried the same thing for Spain than for Italy. Same problem, same conclusion indeed ! Now, there are 141 friends too in the surrounds. Padornelo has disappeared.
We may conclude in 2005, that 98 names among the100 first ones are always there, in the official listing of 1.000 BIGs
